"Semantic technologies for industrial purposes"

This work looks towards the interoperability problems for the computer science and the computer mediated communication applied to the Concurrent Engineering, introducing an innovative approach with the Semantic Web addressed by the description data language on industrial products according with the international standards ISO-IEC 10303.

The Concurrent Engineering relates with the situation where we can "industrialize" a product/process under its development with a "focus" moved from the integration of the production in an interfunctional vision up stream of the process production (representing an evolution of the traditional concept of CIM)

Objectives:
» to provide decision support in a continually changing technical and environmental standards network according to the product design information
» to deal the international standards of ISO/IEC norms for the interoperability dealing with the issue of meta-modelling as a means
» to tap the new possibilities of the Semantic Web and Artificial Intelligence for application in the technical domain

Innovations:
» to link two generic worlds describing the life cycle of products, i.e. STEP/EXPRESS (ISO/IEC 10303) and OWL (Web Ontology Language) towards a morphism
» to design an OWL ontology on the morphism between EXPRESS and OWL according to the ISO/IEC 10303 norm and relative APs
» to design and develop modular software tools to apply the morphism between EXPRESS and OWL


Activities:
» to evaluate relevant technology in the fields of the industrial standards ISO/IEC, the Semantic Web and so the Web 4.0 (according to the W3C roadmap)
» to study and design appropriate ontologies (OWL4EXP) derived from existing standards on international ISO/IEC norms for the production and the automation
» to provide appropriate software interfacing the OWL4EXP ontologies and applying rules to the data, a querying software for meta-levels information and an integrated platform for the tools developed
» to demonstrate the technology with practical examples
